Abide

Okay so I have going to this group on Sunday nights that they call DOXA. I know I should know what that means, but I don't. For all I know it could mean sell your soul, give you money and sacrifice a goat but I don't think so. Last Sunday we sat around and talked about the idea of the vine and branches that Jesus used to illustrate what it meant to be one of His disciples, as recorded in John 15. We were also given the assignment of reading that chapter and meditating on that illustration over the course of the week, to see what stood out to us individually. For me, I have continued to chew on the picture of what a grapevine looks like. When I look at a plant, whether it be a tree, bush, shrub or vine I don't see pieces - I see the whole thing. Meaning, yeah a tree is made up of a trunk, roots, branches, leaves and seeds - but it is all still a tree. Also, with the passing time the whole structure continues to grow and sooner or later, even though in your mind you know that it all started with a seed you can't help but see the tree as being completely connected as a whole entity. Another way of saying it is; the top branch is connected not only to the trunk but also to the bottom branch as well as the deepest root. The youngest seed is connected to the oldest leaf, etc. Now if Jesus is going to decompartmentalize the plant by saying that He is the vine (or trunk) and we are the branches then it is not only true that we cannot separate ourselves from Him, but we would not be able to separate ourselves from one another as well because through Him we are all connected. And this whole paragraph is a rant that I didn't mean to focus on so I will move on now.

What I did want to focus on was the idea of being grafted with Christ and what that means in our day to day lives. It is the whole idea of being able to truly say that in my life there is no way to pinpoint where my life is separate from Christ, or as Paul put it in Galatians 2:20; "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer life, but it is Christ who lives in me". Is it true that I can be so intimate with Christ that my life really is an extension of His life on earth and if so, what does that look like? The following is my opinion and, as always, please know that you are invited to share yours as well (and yes agreeing with me and sharing it will go along way to boost my ego). I truly believe that the key to the ministry if Jesus, and the work of God on earth, is recognizing and seizing the opportunities as they present themselves. Jesus said clearly that His ministry was "watching what the Father was doing and doing likewise". The miracle of Jesus was that, in the records we have of Him, He always knew the right thing to say or do to the right person at the right time. Even in His willingness to be martyred for the sake of humanity, it wasn't until the right time. It is widely known that some of Jesus' travel to certain regions was to avoid other regions where He would have been hunted down as well as instances where He fled through the crowd as they were going to stone Him or throw Him off a cliff. Other times we have recording where He walked into entire communities of the sick and impoverished and only heals a few and then leaves. Also in His teaching, there were times where He was very direct in what He was saying and other times where He spoke in riddles. All of this to say that Jesus was the master of recognizing what was needed in each particular situation.

I would even say that was the difference in the ministry of the disciples pre and post Pentecost. Pre-Pentecost we see instances where the disciples either failed to recognize an opportunity because they were focused on meeting their own needs (ie John 4) or they recognized the opportunity but failed to see what was needed for the situation (ie Matthew 17). On the other hand, the first half of the Book of Acts is dedicated to telling the stories of how the disciples reacted to situations they found themselves in. I would submit that the "Filling of the Holy Spirit" was/is not for the purpose of endowing the disciples of Christ with the abilities to react in supernatural ways. The purpose is to endow the disciples of Christ with the ability to recognize, just as Jesus did, what God is doing in the world around us and to act accordingly.

So, back to the original question; "What does it mean to Abide in Christ?" To me it means this, 1) Recognize the fact that as I am grafted to Christ, I am also grafted to everyone else who is "called according to His name". 2) To be a "minister" of Christ means to live my life as normal and as I am doing that when I see the opportunity to extend His hand or speak His words, do so knowing that as I do - He does. 3) Maturity in Christ means to recognize more and more the opportunities to rest in the knowledge of both 1 and 2.

WARNING: It's a pretty pointless ramble (a lot more so than usual) but I think I stay on topic for at least a sentence or two...

Man, I just spent an hour and a half getting lost in Scripture trying to respond. Two things came to mind. The easy was a Johnny Cash song I thought was relevant to your post because it's soooo much better than that ol' "He is the vine, we are the branches, oooh-oooh-oooh" song that hopefully you've never heard. AND it's just some really cool imagery. Here's the lyrics, the song is titled, "Redemption" from his 2002 album, "American Recordings" (Too much info I know).

From the hands it came down
From the side it came down
From the feet it came down
And ran to the ground
Between heaven and hell
A teardrop fell
In the deep crimson dew
The tree of life grew

And the blood gave life
To the branches of the tree
And the blood was the price
That set the captives free
And the numbers that came
Through the fire and the flood
Clung to the tree
And were redeemed by the blood

From the tree streamed a light
That started the fight
'Round the tree grew a vine
On whose fruit I could dine
My old friend Lucifer came
Fought to keep me in chains
But I saw through the tricks
Of six-sixty-six

And the blood gave life
To the branches of the tree
And the blood was the price
That set the captives free
And the numbers that came
Through the fire and the flood
Clung to the tree
And were redeemed by the blood

From his hands it came down
From his side it came down
From his feet it came down
And ran to the ground
And a small inner voice Said
"You do have a choice."
The vine engrafted me
And I clung to the tree

Yeah, a little artsy but free dope. You gotta hear him sing it, maybe I'll upload the mp3 somewhere so you can grab it but not tonight. I'm tired...

John 12:44-Oops forgot the number...

Jesus shouted to the crowds, “If you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me. For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me. (Colossians 1:15) I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. I will not judge those who hear me but don’t obey me, for I have come to save the world and not to judge it. But all who reject me and my message will be judged (John 16:9) on the day of judgment by the truth I have spoken. I don’t speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it. And I know his commands lead to eternal life; so I say whatever the Father tells me to say.”

Yeah, wow, I really dropped the ball on this one... Anyhow, I agree with you on the Abiding in Christ deal. 1-3, or 1+2? :-)

It's like that old saying that I'll modify for truth's sake. If you look like an orange, and smell like an orange, and taste like an orange... it doesn't really MAKE you an orange. However, if you grow on an orange tree, you are an orange. Postmodern enough? (evil grin) You can fake abiding in Christ but if you abide in Christ, than you abide in Christ. Nothing else really matters.

I can't keep a solid thought in reference to the current concept so I'll end it here by saying:

I'm convinced that we are new creations, it's a spiritual reality meant to become physical. Not in some new age pentecostal way, but in a beautifully human way. We can do nothing to bring it about. It doesn't work based on evolution. It works based on union with our Father through abiding in Christ. Heh, it's the only concept that's allowed me to accept the "Born Again" phrase back into my vocabulary. We are "reborn" as a "new creation" and we are under a "new covenant" prophesied by Jeremiah, that we will be His people and He will be our God. We will have the law written on our minds (so we can understand it) and on our hearts (so we can obey it) And that He will teach us Himself. Fulfilled through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

It sounds like I'm trying to create some sort of new doctrine but I'm not. I'm just trying to understand the ones I'm not taught. I drink the blood of the new covenant but no one ever told me what it was besides I'm born again. I'm told once I speak in tongues I have the baptism of the Holy Spirit and now I'm set for life. Nothing more. Maybe if I'm really spiritual I'll be used in a healing or two. Blah dee blah dee dah! The whole time focus is shifted from what you so smoothly brought it back to: Knowing Him and walking with Him ready to do what He wants to do.

Greater things will you do because I go to the Father. It doesn't mean crazier miracles, per se, it means there will/can be thousands of people walking around led by the SAME SPIRIT that led Christ. That we can be taught by the same FATHER that taught Him. Therefore, we can share in the same nature and that nature is natural supernatural. Shouldn't be impressive. God's not impressed by His power, why should we be impressed by any power He may or may not give us?

"Rejoice that you are the Children of God."

That's my cup of coffee! BTW - I'm loving the Kamodo Dragon blend. Crazy stuff! (No I'm not drinking it now but it feels like it.)

Myk

PS: The last line in your previous post sounded like an old voice mail, if I remember correctly. It's a quote from Hellboy that was stolen from Churchill, maybe? I think you should sue that guy for copyright infringement if you ask me ;-)

I managed to make it through Mike's post, which isn't as daunting when you realize the columns aren't very wide on the comment page.

The thing that struck me about the post was the concept that we are an extension of Christ. We aren't little Christs walking around (that'd be fairly blasphemous), but we, as a whole, are Christ on earth. How wild is that.

I don't know that it's necessarily a new concept to me, but it was definitely a ding in my head when I saw it. My view has been that we exist in these concentrations of Christ. It starts with general theological view, then down to denomination, then down to the church. They're all separate with the common thread of Christ loosely linking them together, and we exist in whichever concentration we choose.

I'm not sure how to describe what I'm seeing in my head. Let me give it a shot and don't think any heresy or anything of it because it's just an image to describe a concept... Jesus is sitting on the throne up in heaven. Now picture that his arms are stretched out in front of him with his hands dangling. Now picture each of his hands having millions of fingers, all of them hanging down and resting on the earth.

If you've ever seen Princess Mononoke, it's sort of like the deer guy after it's been shot, but not all evil. :)

We are the fingers, connected to Christ through the muscle of the Spirit which knows His will and moves us to action.

Why couldn't the bible describe things in terms we could really understand? Instead of this vine stuff, just say that we're the fingers of this gelatinous blob thing. It'd make it that much easier. :)

I'm off topic and have lost my train of thought, so I'll just leave it at that. Someone please tell me that my picture is not totally retarded. Thanks
